Irish
Beach NEST

There is a Neighborhood Emergency Services Team (NEST)
here in Irish Beach. The Irish Beach NEST and other coastal NESTs
from Timber Cove to Irish Beach are sponsored by the Coast Life Support
District (CLSD). There are six NEST teams in Irish Beach (Damage
Assessment/Safety and Security, Light Search and Rescue, First Aid, Shelter
and Special Care, Communications, and Animal Care). and approximately
10 active members serving on these teams. We need more people in the community
to participate.
NEST TEAMS
The NEST teams are
trained to provide assistance in an emergency but are only dispatched to assess
damage to and assist NEST households. NEST volunteer team members are
covered for liability and injury by state-sponsored workers' compensation
insurance. A condition of that coverage limits the NEST unit to provide
only that assistance for which members have been trained under NEST-authorized
training and only to NEST households.
NEST HOUSEHOLDS
To be a NEST household, you must complete a NEST household survey and
authorize access to your house in the event of a disaster. To make
sure that you can get the assistance you will need in the event of an
emergency, please sign up by filling out the household survey. Survey
forms can be requested via our new email address at ibnestinfo@hughes.net
You may also download a PDF file of the NEST
Household Survey and the NEST
Pet Record here.
SPONSORS
Although Mendocino County and CLSD sponsor the NEST program, that sponsorship
does not include financial assistance and we still need funds to purchase
supplies and equipment that we may need in the community in the event
of a disaster. We are asking for a $25.00 annual membership fee from each
household to fund the purchase of the required safety, search and rescue,
first aid and communications equipment. Checks should be made out to Al
Thompson (NEST); please send your completed survey form and check to Irish
Beach Nest, P O Box 242, Manchester CA, 95459.
NEST
households must also have an OK/HELP sign that should be displayed (in
a location easily visible from the street) in the event of a disaster.
This will tell the NEST team members who are inspecting the community
after the disaster occurs whether or not there are people in the house
who need help. This sign is only used to report on the status of the people
not the structure. Damage to structure will be assessed after the people
of the community are taken care of. If you are injured and there is no
one who can display the sign, the team will determine that the lack of
a sign will mean that help is needed. Therefore every NEST household is
required to obtain the OK/HELP sign. The NEST team has obtained a supply
of these signs. The cost of these signs is $5.00. Please included this
$5.00 in your membership fee check if you don't already have one of these
signs.
