DrainageDuring times of heavy rains, significant drainage issues are evident throughout Irish Beach. These issues include surface water, over-flowing drainage ditches, flooded lots, erosion, slippage, and septic system problems. A study of some of these issues was conducted by an Ad Hoc committee of Irish Beach property owners during the 2002/2003 rainy season. The purpose of this study was to increase awareness of these issues within the community. Preliminary findings and pictorial evidence were presented at the May 2003 annual IBIC meeting; however, it was beyond the capability of the committee to make detailed technical recommendations for correction of these issues. In order to improve the drainage in Irish Beach, action is needed on the part of many separate entities. At the urging of this committee, the Mendocino County Department of Transportation cleared all roadside drainage ditches during April 2003, and this action will undoubtedly improve the discharge of upstream water. However without the creation of a comprehensive plan involving the development of drainage easements and improved drainage paths to the ocean, significant problems will continue to plague this community and some of its property owners. County & state agencies have certain responsibilities in this community, however individual property owners and the developers also have an obligation to be aware of this situation, bring about solutions, and not knowingly contribute to the existing problem. We urge all property owners and prospective buyers to become informed about drainage issues at Irish Beach. We will find a solution to this significant and increasing problem only with the participation of all members of the community. This
